How Can Social Housing Association Changes People’s Lives?

At its annual conference, the National Housing Federation announced that housing associations throughout the UK will be developing innovative ideas to address the nation's largest future social challenges.

Creating our Future, the National Housing Federation’s new programme, will unite housing associations across the UK to develop products and services that bring about positive change on a national scale.

The National Housing Federation is partnering with Big Society Capital, the noted independent social investor, on the challenge. The latter has recognised the ability of Britain’s housing associations to implement meaningful social change across the country.

Big Society Capital will invest up to £15m for the best, most investment-worth idea that Creating our Future generates. The winners must be innovative in scope, have a positive social impact, and be sustainable financially. They must also have a sound business model.

The challenge, which will run for 18 months, will use the innovation and enthusiasm of housing associations across the country, collecting several ideas before developing and testing the most promising ones with residents and local communities.

In 2019 the National Housing Federation will host a Futures Expo to launch the ideas that have to potential to make a real difference in lives across England.

James Green, the National Housing Federation’s Director of the Creating our FutureProgramme, said that housing associations are in a prime position to respond to tomorrow’s challenges, given their status as successful businesses with strong community roots. Innovation is also second nature to them, from building affordable homes to equipping residents with the skills for future success.

Mr Green said that Creating our Future builds on the core mission and deep heritage of the sector by using the drive and energy of housing associations to address the social issues that the country faces.

Cliff Prior, the Big Society Capital Chief Executive Officer, stated that the organisation was proud to be a core partner in the projection, which he called “transformational”.

He said that housing associations have addressed social issues on many occasions in the past and Creating our Future will enable them to do so again, using the new technologies and other advantages that are available.

Mr Prior said that the £15m investment demonstrates Big Society Capital’s commitment to working with the National Housing Federation to improve lives through housing.
