Survey Shows Drone Usage Increases in UK Construction

A ProDroneWorx survey suggests that the UK and Irish construction industries are continuing to use digital/reality information captured by drone technology, with 52% now using it compared to only 33% last year..

ProDroneWorx questioned leaders in the construction, asset inspection, and infrastructure markets about how they perceived, understood, and used the digital/reality capture outputs from construction drones. 150 respondents from across the UK and Ireland took part in the survey.

Kier, a leading construction company, said that the ProDroneWorx survey showed how far construction drone technology has progressed. It is working closely with ProDroneWorx on important project to enjoy the benefits of drone technology, including 360 photography, progress capture and photogrammetry.

CIAT Vice-President Technical Steven Hedley said that tightening of regulation and licencing laws surrounding the use of construction drones makes it imperative that specialist operators continue to develop drone technology and and integrate it with Building Information Modelling (BIM) within the construction industry to minimise misuse and maximise benefits.

The survey found that the top three reasons for using the technology are:

  • Better data quality (56%)
  • Saves time (54%)
  • Risk reduction (42%)

Fewer companies intend to utilise drone technology themsleves, possibly due to the amount of expertise and knowledge needed to deploy them.

The survey also found that drone technology is being underutilised at present. While 74% of respondents said that they used it for photography and video, less than 30% use it for value-added services such as 3D modelling, 3D point clouds, digital surface/terrain models, thermal imaging, orthophotos, and aerial LiDAR.

ProDroneWorx Managing Director Ian Tansey said that at a time when construction is facing tight margins of around 2% and the landscape is becoming increasingly competitive, using digital/reality capture data gives construction firms a decided advantage over the competition by improving the quality of its data, lowering costs, increasing productivity, and mitigating risk.
