New Land Mapping Tool introduced by Highland Council

On the 11th of March, the Highland Council announced the release of a new mapping tool to show land availability for business and industrial use across the area to support investment in the Highlands.

The purpose of the Business & Industrial Land Audit (BILA) will be to measure the land allocated to local development plans for business or industrial usage and will assess how quickly it can be made accessible and ready to use. This is the latest plan installed that will research the designated areas and use the results of audit to aid the formulation of strategies and provide more information for policy documents.

An assessment of the sites took place in 2018 with the results showing that 324 were available for development and the areas have been categorised to suit availability and any potential delays in construction have already been identified. An astonishing 94 sites consisting of 221ha were established as available for immediate development.

The information is posted on the Highland Council’s website in the format of a ‘story map’ slowing for a deeper insight and providing multiple views of the allocated land. This information will also be available in written, graphed and tabled form.

Chair of the Council’s Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Allan Henderson, stated, “The tool is a very accessible way for people to find out key information. The team have devised it so users can get a clear overview on the availability of sites and can also drill down the system to get the detailed information.

“The council is committed to attracting investment to the Highlands and recognises that economic growth is critical to enabling our communities not just to survive, but to thrive. Having the audit of available opportunities available in such a simple and interactive way is going to be of big help.”
