The Biggest Smart Home Developments From CES 2019

The smart home market is full of new and exciting tech, and there’s no sign of this changing any time soon. At CES 2019, there was a ton of new products everywhere. It was hard to narrow down the list, but here are some of the biggest smart home developments on the market today.

Video Doorbells

Video doorbells were a popular presence at CES 2019. French company Netatmo had a device with two invaluable features that caused it to stand out:

  • It is the first video doorbell that can be integrated with Apple HomeKit
  • It stores video using a microSD card so that you don’t need a subscription plan if you want to save and record video.

Another crowd pleaser was the Kasa doorbell, which has a 2K HDR camera instead of the 1080p that limits most doorbell cameras. It can use facial recognition to differentiate your family from invited and uninvited visitors, which adds an extra layer of security

Smart Lights

Nanoleaf hexagon lights change colours, with up to 16.7 million colours to choose from. They have different operating modes that respond to touch or sound. While they might be too kaleidoscopic to put in your bedroom, they would look great in a gaming room or area. The hexagon lights work with HomeKit and are expected to be available by the end of the year.

Smart Locks

The Secure Pro smart lock by Lockly has five different unlocking methods to choose from:

  • The app
  • Voice assistant command
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • Keypad
  • Physical key

The most popular feature is the keypad, which conceals your passcode by having you press several numbers at the same time. Even if someone is standing next to you, it will be difficult to detect your password. The lock also works with Alexa and Google Assistant.

Connected Hub Wall Oven

This smart oven concept from Whirlpool uses a form of augmented reality to show you how to prepare your favourite dishes. You can use the 27” transparent display to access recipes. The product is still in the conceptual stage so it will likely experience more changes before it is released to the market.

Key for Garage

Amazon originally released Amazon Key so that delivery drivers could unlock your front door. Now we have Key for Garage, which still supports package delivery while protecting your personal privacy. It is only launching in larger cities at the moment but should eventually expand to other regions.

Intelligent Toilet

This smart toilet by Kohler works with Alexa. Surround sound speakers play nature sounds and the side has a transforming dusky light that can be used to set the mood. It’s unusual for sure but serves as a reminder that smart home products are now available for all rooms and needs.

Many of these smart home development products are not on the market yet, with shipping dates specified for later in the year. But when they become available, they will add more tech variety for our homes.
